Pharmacy Technician Certification

Pharmacy technician certification is not required to practice as a pharmacy tech. Neither is an undergraduate degree. However, it can be advantageous to study for certification because of its overall benefits. It attests that the standards that pharmacy technicians require to do their job correctly have been met. For those who pass the pharmacy technician certification, it means confidence in their skills. For those who plan someday to advance to higher-level positions, certification can open the door to promotions and higher pay. Also, pharmacy is a fast-growing undergraduate career with tough competition for jobs; and getting certified puts you ahead of the competition.

There are several pharmacy technician certification programs available, so it’s best to do some research and find one with a good reputation. You also want to make sure you meet the program’s qualifications. Almost all require at least a high school diploma with no criminal history. You will need also to enroll in pharmacy-related classes so you know what to expect on the test and know your responsibilities in your role as a pharmacy technician. Once you have completed the classes, you are ready for the test.

There are two main pharmacy technician certification exams to choose from: the Examination for Certified Pharmacy Technicians; and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. The tests focus on pharmacy technician responsibilities, such as medical inventory maintenance and responsibilities to the client and pharmacist. They can be taken multiple times; however, a fee is charged for each attempt. Although taking a pharmacy technician certification exam can cost a lot of time and money, it is worth it in the end. Also, many employers reimburse their students for a portion of the costs incurred for taking the exam.

Passing the pharmacy technician exam is not the end of the process. In order to remain certified, you must continue to take classes to stay current. Ten hours is required every two years, with one hour dedicated to pharmacy law.
