Health Careers

You may be interested in undergraduate careers in health, but wonder whether health and medicine is the right path for you. A health career is not for everyone and requires excellent people skills. You will be, for the most part, dealing with patients on a daily basis. Also, you will need a strong background in math and science, so if you’re not particularly strong in these subjects, you might want to consider an office assistant or administrative health career position. Health careers also require employees to work as a team and keep up with current trends in the healthcare field. This means that even after earning your college degree, you’ll need to continue learning; so you should have a love of learning.

Health Careers

Health careers can be fast-paced and very stressful. You may have to deal with severely injured or dying patients on a daily basis. Health careers require you to be able to work under pressure, handle high volumes of stress and often, work long hours. This can be difficult if you have a family or other responsibilities. However, despite the stress and long hours, health careers can be very rewarding – both mentally and financially. Doctors are the highest-paid profession. Depending on their specialty, they can make more than $150,000 annually.

Above all, health careers require a commitment to helping people. Health professionals need to have empathy and be genuinely interested in the health of their patients. They must be patient and understanding without being judgmental. Health careers also require a huge educational commitment. While nurses and assistants may need only 1-2 years of college education, doctors can expect to spend 11-18 years in school – and still take classes after that. When choosing a health career, it’s important to take this into consideration because an education in this field can be costly and time-consuming.
