Education Degree
If you are patient, motivated and curious; enjoy helping others, especially children; and have excellent leadership capabilities; you may be a good fit for an undergraduate degree in education. An education degree encompasses much more than teaching. The undergraduate career field in this area can include curriculum development, psychology, leadership, policy studies and technology. Education degrees are available as teaching certificates, as well as bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees. Most elementary school teachers are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate, while teaching roles at universities require at least a master’s degree. Administrators, such as school principals, are generally required to have a master’s degree, with some roles requiring a Ph.D.
Teachers often focus on a specific age group. Some prefer to teach preschool-age children, while some may be interested in teaching children in elementary school, high school, college or university. Some teachers may teach only adult learners, such as those going back to school to pass high school equivalency tests or those interested in learning new, job-related skills.
An education degree generally is required to teach. It teaches aspiring teachers about education laws and rights and exposes them to education theories and practices. It also teaches students about new technologies that they can expect to use in the classroom. Almost all education degree programs require the completion of an internship or a semester as a student teacher. Aspiring teachers can acquire experience from being around children and encouraging them, such as in the roles of a parent, babysitter or tutor.
Required classes for an education degree include psychology, social and cognitive development and education history. Education students learn to teach general subjects, such as literature, reading, math, science, geography, history, music and art. Aspiring teachers also learn how to teach different types of students, such as those from a different culture and those with special needs. One of the benefits of obtaining an education degree is that you are allowed to focus on one or two main subjects you would enjoy teaching. This means you can tailor your studies, according to your interests
