Dance School

Dance is a type of art form that involves rhythm and making a statement through movement. Those interested in learning the skills needed to become a successful dancer may choose to get an undergraduate degree in dance. Dance school programs are often rigorous and highly specialized. Dance school is a good way to learn about your body and its physical abilities, but it must be pointed out that undergraduate career opportunities in dance are very limited, and usually don't pay well.

A dance school will often require an audition prior to admission. This involves learning a dance routine and performing it in front of the admissions committee. There are usually dress requirements and other paperwork required, so it’s best to check before the audition. After the audition, most schools require an interview. A dance school may allow students to submit a performance tape in lieu of an audition. Dance school is very competitive and limited to a small number of students, so it’s best to apply to many schools. In addition to the audition, schools look favorable upon academic excellence.

Dance School

A typical dance school offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs. There are two main undergraduate degrees: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.). The difference between these two is that the B.A. is designed more for students who want to teach or work in some other capacity in a school environment, whereas the B.F.A. is designed for those who actually plan to dance or choreograph as a career.

In dance school, students can expect to take classes in dance history and theory, choreography and movement. Some dance schools may require students to take dance as a specialization while taking general classes toward a B.F.A., allowing students to become more well-rounded. A dance school will have facilities, such as stages and studios, for students to practice and perform throughout the program. Students will receive training and mentoring from professionals in the field.
