CCNA Certification
For those skilled at installing computer networks and who are looking to increase the number of job opportunities available to them that don't require college degrees, a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification is available. A CCNA certification is useful in proving to employers and clients that one has the skills to install, maintain and troubleshoot small networks. Those with this certification have a solid knowledge of wireless networks, routing, IP addresses, Ethernet and computer security. They also must know LAN, WAN and protocols such as Frame Relay and Serial. For techies, this is a great undergraduate job choice.
Obtaining a CCNA certification requires no previous classes; however, it is geared toward those with intermediate experience in networking. It should not be viewed as a test for beginners with little experience. CCNA certification requires a two-part exam on the topic of Cisco networking devices. The test can be taken as a combined test, which takes 90 minutes and has 55-65 questions, or as two individual exams, taking 135 minutes with 85-105 questions total. Which path the student takes depends on their learning/studying style. Some may prefer to focus on one section of the test at a time, while others may prefer to “get it over with” and take the combined test so they can get their CCNA certification by taking just one test. In addition, there is a fee for each test, so taking the combined test is less costly. Upon completion of the test, students receive their score, along with any feedback. If they pass the test, they will be certified immediately.
The CCNA certification must be renewed every three years by passing a qualifying CCNA or Cisco Specialist test. For those who need help studying for the tests, there are a variety of resources online. Forums, study guides and practice exams are available for those who want to pass the test to receive their CCNA certification.
